Chelsea and Soho are examples of how the creative revitalization of London has progressed through the years. The accessibility of the city gives it even more appeal â€" entrepreneurs can easily travel to promote their start-up, and investors can easily reach the city to check out the project. For production companies, products and raw materials can easily be transported through a wide range of transportation options.2. TAX INCENTIVESGovernment support of the tech industry in London can be seen with the creation of a department specifically designed to encourage start-ups. By connecting tech businesses with the resources they need to succeed, the government is helping to ensure success at every level. In addition to offering tax incentives and programs to assist businesses that start in London, they offer events and promotions that raise public awareness of the growing tech industry of Europe. The backing of the government in the start-up market gives credibility to London as a powerhouse in this area. They are putting their money where their mouth is, so to speak, by creating an environment that welcomes the innovative world of tech start-ups. By giving them the incentive they need to not only venture into the start-up market, but also allowing them time to develop and succeed financially, London is ensuring that they continue to attract start-up entrepreneurs. In addition, the creation of specific tax incentives that appeal to start-ups demonstrates the commitment of the British government to innovation. With tax credits that can give up to a fifty percent credit to investors, there is a strong push to encourage investments in start-ups. With the full support of the government, there is a clear message that London doesn’t just think start-ups are a good idea; they are motivating people to create them.3. LEGAL INCENTIVESLondon is attractive to start-ups because of the lack of red tape that surrounds the process of beginning a business. By offering s upport in the legalities of forming a corporation, London is creating a culture where start-ups can flourish. They can help encourage more entrepreneurs by increasing the legal incentives to corporations who operate within the city and by providing additional assistance as needed to further develop the start-up. As a political and business center, there are a vast number of law firms and legal experts who have made London their headquarters. The legal requirements to operate in the European market are not as murky as it is in some of the world’s countries. For the start-up entrepreneur who needs legal guidance, there are lawyers from almost every major international law firm available to help navigate the legal world of start-ups.4. AVAILABILITY OF INVESTORSOne of the largest hurdles London faces as a start-up hub is the funding gap. A large gap between initial investment and growth investment exists â€" estimates claim there is over 80% less funding in the second stage of develop ment than that of Silicon Valley investors. The gap is primarily due to a lack of super angel investors in the London arena. By continuing to pursue the innovative entrepreneur, London is in a good position to launch viable start-ups. As more start-ups achieve success, investors will be more prone to invest, creating a self-sustaining cycle that will further help to drive the hub.If London wants to remain competitive in the tech start-up industry, they need to expand their focus towards some of the less-traditional technology markets. Historically, entrepreneurs in London tend to be more averse to risk and direct their attention towards smaller, less ambitious markets. It follows, then, that venture capitalist investors in London tend to be more reserved in their investments as well. The natural reticence of the British may have a cultural influence that will not serve them well as they consider the future. The London start-up entrepreneur needs to tap into the creative, free style spirit of the culture in London to develop fresh, new technology. As start-ups become successful, investors will begin to take notice of the advantage in putting money into some of the ‘riskier’ companies.5. AVAILABILITY OF LOCAL RESOURCES AND WORKFORCEThe recent economic downturn pushed skilled workers out of the workplace and into the private sector. With an influx of talent in the entrepreneur market, the workplace is teeming with skilled, available labor. Channeling the innovative ideas and technology towards start-up ideas may require some effort and planning, but can be done. The workplace has workers, the challenge London faces will be to give them an environment where they can thrive and create. While sheer number of employees is high, there is a lack of technical workers in London â€" creating a demand for digital companies to find new employees. Attracting students to the IT related fields, offering training courses that will attract people into the world of programming , and bringing new incentives to students towards industries that have experienced a falling away are all ways that London can help to boost the lack of workers in these fields. Free training classes, online courses and workshops are all ways to help give developers the training they need to fill the gaps in workforce. Current estimates show that London only has approximately half the technical workforce that they need â€" creating a huge lack of people with practical and technically proficient skills.Drawing on the resources of the vibrant city, there is a huge potential for collaboration across industries. The potential for innovative thinking and design can be best seen in the Silicon Roundabout â€" the center of innovation in London that houses at least 1,000 companies and is clustered around London’s Google campus.London Startups Eco System: Ympact 6. SPECIALIZATIONThe unique culture of London combines the best of fashion and art with the growing tech market. By continuing to capitalize on the start-up ready environment London has created, the innovative entrepreneur has a wide field to thrive in.London boasts of the highest proportion of tech entrepreneurs who are women â€" with the largest female start-up offerings in Europe. This could (and should) be an area where London can excel. With the creation of networking events and organizations specifically targeting women, the start-up community is helping to abolish the idea that all tech start-ups are headed by men. The community of women entrepreneurs is filled with women from a variety of industries: development, design and more. There are a surprising number of tech start-ups that have been developed specifically for London residents and visitors, which are starting to adapt and expand into other markets. The idea of area specific applications is not new, but the high number of them that have developed within London is unusual. The Best Sandwiches in London, for example, can help you locate a sandwich based on your location â€" proving that London entrepreneurs are practical (as well as concerned about the availability of a good lunch). A host of Olympic centered programs sprang up for the Londoner to keep track of where events were taking place, help avoid the crowds and cheer on the home team. With this type of ingenuity, it gives ideas about the type of specialization that London can focus on: practical, everyday innovations. The London start-up hub is on track to become one of the leading entrepreneur sites in the world. The culturally reserved London crowd is hesitant to compare itself to Silicon Valley, so the rest of the world has to make the comparison for them. It is clear to the out sider, though, that London will give Silicon Valley a run for its investor money within a few years. The hurdles that London faces are not insurmountable and if anything, should help to spur on the start-up hopeful. London’s technology climate is just waiting for a start-up to give the hub the needed boost that will encourage others to not only leave the confines of the typical London business box, but to venture into a new world of tech possibilities.By focusing on increasing tech development, London can continue to compete with the larger markets in Silicon Valley and other start-up hubs. They need to place priority on finding new fields of innovation, establish growth funders who are willing to invest in the further development of start-ups and begin the process of finding new avenues of creative thinking. The elements are all in place, so the world (and London) is waiting for someone to put them all together. The business world is changing and with their continuing establishmen t of start-ups and tech hubs, London will be at the forefront of the new tech world. The tech world offers more flexibility, greater options and an increased level of risk than the traditional corporate world. With the current downturn of the global economy and the overall sense of unease about the stability of the corporate giants, there doesn’t seem to be much more risk in starting something new. When London begins to understand that their start-ups are competitive on a global scale and that they can not only showcase that talent to the rest of the world but can revel in their accomplishments, the London start-up hub will be virtually unstoppable. By creating new business opportunities, giving investors new reasons to invest and then continuing the growth of start-ups, London is not only creating activity in the economy, they are offering optimism.A few of the hottest new start-ups to emerge in LondonGoCardless.  A direct payment application that allows consumers to make payment s without swiping a credit card, it is starting to revolutionize the small business payment process. Relationships between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Free Essays

The play â€Å"Macbeth† by William Shakespeare is about cruelty, greediness, and desire of undeserved power. Actually, the main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are both representative of the abovementioned qualities. Relationships between Macbeth and his wife are complex and tangled; moreover, they are changing over the play progress. We will write a custom essay sample on Relationships between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth or any similar topic only for you Order Now Their relations play important role in the play as they aim at setting necessary atmosphere, creating moods, attitudes and feelings. It is seen that their relations aren’t perfect, though they stay with each other till the end: Macbeth: â€Å"We will proceed no further in this business: He hath honour’d me of late; and I have bought Golden opinions from all sorts of people, Which would be worn now in their newest gloss, Not cast aside so soon†.  Lady Macbeth: â€Å"Was the hope drunk wherein you dress’d yourself? Hath it slept since? And wakes it now, to look so green and pale at what it did so freely? From this time; such I account thy love. Art thou afeard to be the same in thine own act and valor; Letting â€Å"I dare not† wait upon â€Å"I would,† Like the poor cat i’ the adage?† (Act I, scene II) Apparent disagreement is seen in the family and it continues throughout the play. Lady Macbeth is horrifying in her ruthlessness and cruelty, whereas she calls her husband a coward when he decides not to kill Duncan stressing that his decision is final and shouldn’t be discussed any more. In contrast to Macbeth, his wife is decision and leads everything to the end. She always makes her mind and only then acts. Lady Macbeth is provided with the power of persuasion and we see that she is more powerful than her husband as she convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan and he agrees. So, relations of the couple are based mainly on Lady’s Macbeth will as she is natural leader, whereas he husband is simply executor. Macbeth is presented to listen to his wife in such a way admitting her leadership and intellectual superiority. Nevertheless, their relations are based also on the sense of openness and mutual trust. It is hardly believable that Lady Macbeth talks her husband into murdering a person and their relationships are worsening as the mood of love is replaced by hatred. Macbeth is timid and fearful failing to go on: Macbeth: â€Å"I’ll go no more: I am afraid to think what I have done; Look on’t again I dare not.† Lady Macbeth: â€Å"Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers: the sleeping and the dead Are but as pictures: ’tis the eye of childhood that fears a painted devil. If he does bleed, I’ll gild the faces of the grooms withal, for it must seem their guilt†. (Act II, scene II) Nevertheless, their relations are on the peak only when Macbeth becomes a king and they are filled with joy and happiness. They are shown to free of guilt and full of love and desire of more power. They are happily discussing the number of guests from Scotland to be invited to the feast. Their relations are improving and now they are loving family rather than guilty murders. However, there are pure evil, despite they are wrapped up in a luxurious exterior. Premeditated murder is the first step into darkness and Macbeth and his wife have taken in without stopping. As far as they are free of guilt, they are agreeable and happy together. They are both presentation of masculinity in the play. They think if they are happy, their evil would turn around and â€Å"nip them in the butt†. Only after Macbeth experiences a tale of woe, his attitude towards wife is changing. It is evil which comes back and haunts him. Then Lady Macbeth is visited by Banguo, the ghost, who creates the feeling of discomfort and urgency to act: Macbeth: â€Å"Ay, and a bold one, that dare look on that which might appall the devil?† Lady Macbeth: â€Å"O proper stuff! This is the very painting of your fear: This is the air-drawn dagger which, you said, led you to Duncan. O, these flaws, and starts, – Impostors to true fear,–would well become A woman’s story at a winter’s fire, Authorized by her grandam. Shame itself! Why do you make such faces? When all’s done, you look but on a stool†. (Act III, scene IV) Lady Macbeth supports and defends her husband. When she sees that her husband is ready to reveal everything, she lies to honored guests protecting her secrets. She loves her husband and in her speech we see she is really downcast and uncomfortable, though she is still full of love. Together they are trying to fight against the sense of guilt, the rumors supporting and nourishing their love. There are shown as united and bonded couple and it may seem that evil is succeeding. It is necessary to outline that relationships between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are directly affecting their actions, decisions and behavior. In other words, they are interconnected not only by family ties, but also common secrets. Their relations are the block of the whole play. When they are getting into detailed conversation, they always find mutual decision, though it is not a good one. Macbeth loves his wife and his life is mutual; they always try to please each other. Sometimes they relations are on the peak, though sometimes they meet the flat line. Macbeth is obsessed with greediness and Lady Macbeth is overfilled with desire to make her husband a king. So, their mutual support results in catastrophe for the country of Scotland. In the end we see that Macbeth becomes obsessed with greediness more than his cruel and demon-infested wife. He even doesn’t talk to her making Lady Macbeth commit suicide. Even then the evil in Macbeth is flourishing and he simply doesn’t notice that his beloved woman has gone. Shakespeare shows that Macbeth is on his stairway to the hell collapsing the whole empire built by Duncan. Macbeth is left alone: soldiers and his trust companion abandon him. It seems that Macbeth should feel ashamed and guilty, though he is obsessed with evil. So, desire of power and money splits up their family relations. Evil and darkness appears to be more powerful than love and happiness. Works Cited Damrosch, David. Longman Anthology of World Literature. US: Longman, 2004. Greenblatt, Stephen. The Salem Witchcraft Trials Essays - Salem Witch Trials,

The Salem Witchcraft Trials The Salem Witchcraft Trials The Salem Witchcraft trials in Massachusetts during 1692 resulted in nineteen innocent men and women being hanged, one man pressed to death, and in the deaths of more than seventeen who died in jail. It all began at the end of 1691 when a few girls in the town began to experiment with magic by gathering around a crystal ball to try to find the answer to questions such as "what trade their sweet harts should be of ". This conjuring took place in the Parris household where a woman named Tituba, an Indian slave, headed the rituals. Soon after they had begun to practice these rituals, girls who had been involved, including the Master Parris' daughter and niece, became sick. They had constant fits, twitched, cried, made odd noises, and huddled in corners. The family called in doctors, and they were treated for many illnesses. Nothing helped. Many weeks later after running out of reasons for their strange behavior, all of their symptoms seemed to lead to one belief, "The evil hand is upon them." They were possessed by the Devil. At first the families of the children could not find anyone to accuse for being the witch responsible for possessing the children. Then, late in February of 1692, Parris' neighbor, Mary Sibley recommended that Parris' slaves, Tituba and John Indian, should work a spell to try to find the culprits. Even after trying this solution the girls' condition worsened, and the people responsible still had not been found. The girls began to see hazy shadows and believed that these shadows were of the people who had done this to them. After more and more children became victims of this, the hunting for the witches who were to blame for the girls' sickness began to get more serious. By the end of February 1692, not one, but three witches had been named. These women were Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba, all residents of Salem Village. Sarah Good was a poor "socially undesirable" member of the village of Salem which made her susceptible to accusations of being a witch and of practicing black magic. She was well known in the village for her eccentric behavior, and in the past people had suspected her of being a witch. Her husband, William Good, was a simple laborer and his inadequate income forced the Goods to accept charity and to beg for goods from their neighbors. Sometimes they even had to live with their neighbors, but this never lasted long. Sarah Good's actions and behaviors would often cause unrest in the hosts and their families, and then the Good family would be asked to leave. A few of the villagers they stayed with reported that their livestock would begin to sicken and die after the Goods were forced to leave. More than fifteen families claimed that Sarah Good bewitched their livestock while others reported that she could make objects disappear into thin air. When Good was questioned about these accusations, her answers were always tight-lipped and aggressive, further leading the people to believe that she was in fact a witch. Sarah Osborne was also one of the first three women accused of putting spells on the girls and possessing them. Unlike Tituba and Sarah Good, however, she was from a very wealthy household. Although it is believed sometimes that only poor people were accused of being witches, in the Salem Witchcraft Trials, this was not true, as in the case of Osborne. Women and men accused of being witches were either looked down upon in the community or envied for their land and wealth, as Sarah Osborne was in Salem. Tituba, like Good, was very poor. She worked as a servant in the Parris home and was a Carib Indian born in Barbados in the West Indies. Reverend Parris brought Tituba to New England when he was still a merchant, and after this she married John Indian who also worked as slave for Reverend Parris. Tituba was the person asked to aid with the girls' illnesses by making a witch's cake to find their culprit and after this did not work, she was arrested four days later for being a witch herself. Each of these three women was examined by local Salem officials before they were sent off to await trial in a Boston jail. The girls, who these witches had supposedly inflicted sickness upon, were also present during these trials to show the court how much pain the three women had caused. During the trial Sarah Good kept insisting that she was

The ban of miraa (khat) trade in the UK Essays - Counties Of Kenya

The ban of miraa (khat) trade in the UK Essays - Counties Of Kenya The ban of miraa (khat) trade in the UK and the Netherlands has been cited as one of major threats to development in Meru County. Other problems affecting the county are cattle rustling, border disputes with Tharaka Nithi and Isiolo counties and natural disasters such as drought, landslides and floods. The County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP, 2013-2017) however says the county enjoys huge opportunities created by the Lamu Port South-Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) project and proximity to the Mt Kenya tourist sites. The county further hopes to cash in on the construction of an airport in Isiolo County, availability of many rivers and water sources and its bordering the proposed resort city of Isiolo. The CIDP adds that the county led by Governor Peter Munya also enjoys adequate raw materials which can be used for industrialisation. UNTAPPED RESOURCES The untapped rich Meru cultural practices and natural resources were also cited as a plus for the vast county. Among the countys strengths, the CIDP says, are availability of wide range of skilled labour, large tracts of arable land, favourable climate for agriculture, potential for irrigation agriculture, strategic location and hospitable people. Meru County further boasts of fair infrastructural facilities including tarmac roads, telecommunication and electricity. At the same time, many financial institutions have set base there. WEAKNESSES The CIDP names limited industrialisation, value addition to agricultural produce, vast un-adjudicated land, relatively high illiteracy levels, cultural rigidity, skewed distribution of education and health facilities and high understaffing across sectors as the countys weaknesses. The county which lies in eastern Kenya also suffers from poor soil conservation measures, poor subsistence agricultural practices and land subdivision. The development plan notes that the tourism potential of the county is not fully exploited owing to poor road networks. It says the county intends to enhance its competitiveness by investing in infrastructural development like roads, electricity, transport and housing and that Sh57 billion is to be raised and pumped into the projects in the next five years.
